Being born and raised in Ocean Falls, where it can sprinkle up to a mere 562 mm of rain per year, it is a right of passage for me to say “I know water!”
There is no debate that we need to hydrate ouselves whilst in the far infrared sauna, (and at all other times) with cool, clean water. In a sauna session that lasts in excess of an hour, one should consume over a liter of water! One must also consider how that refreshing, all natural beverage is being stored and how simple it is to remove any potential danger from our health enhancing rituals.
Plastic sports bottle are what the majority of us use on a daily basis. While we may take great pains to access the cleanest, freshest water we can find (and in spite of the rapidly increasing prices at the gas pumps, water still remains the most expensive of the two) we thoughtlessly put it in containers that could potentially undermine our health.
A study done at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, and published in the Canadian Joural of Public Health, showed alarmingly high levels of bacteria in water bottles that were reused without being cleaned. Researchers collected 76 bottles from elementary school students and analyzed the leftover water. The amount of bacteria exceeded safety standards in more than 13 percent of the bottles.
There's this less than refreshing bit of information - PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a plastic often used to make drinking water bottles. The United States Food and Drug Administration had approved these containers for one-time use only. At the University of Idaho a study was conducted which subjected bottles made from PET to heat, ultraviolet light, and manual pressure meant to replicate the way you squeeze the plastic when you drink. Over a period of a few days to a few weeks - unhealthy compounds, including some that are carcinogenic, leached into the water from water from the plastic, the study showed.
